The study aimed to evaluate the patient safety culture among selected hospitals in Metro Manila using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) measurement tool by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the United States of America and attempted to provide explanation of some of the characteristics of patient safety culture that are unique in The Philippines. This study aimed to provide health care organizations in the Philippines a better understanding about patient safety culture in the country's hospitals.

This study is a Quantitative research that focused on patient safety culture. Quantitative study refers to the systematic empirical investigation of social phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. The researchers gathered clinical staffs (nurses) at Fatima University Medical Center (FUMC), Valenzuela Medical Center (VMC) and Bernardino General Hospital. A modified adopted questionnaire known as Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) from Agency of Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) was utilized. The answers from the questionnaire were tallied and underwent statistical treatment with use of frequency distributions, weighted mean and reliability analysis.

Based on data that the researchers gathered, it revealed that there is a more positive response in the Philippines regarding safety culture composites such as teamwork within units, organizational learning, feedback and communication about error, teamwork across the units, and lastly handoffs & transitions compare to the AHRQ database. However, there is a huge negative difference in terms of communication openness and non-punitive response to error.
The paper has achieved to answer the perceptions of the healthcare staff in the Philippines regarding patient safety culture with regards to the 12 dimensions and by comparing it with AHRQ database. The researchers have known what aspect of patient safety culture in the hospital must be improved for better patient care.
